                                 This is Halloween?

I have decided that this year I want to dress up for Halloween.  Last year went pretty well as we decided to dress as Marge and Homer Simpson.  So my husband and I went off to the "Halloween store"  a couple of days ago.  I don't know if you have ever been in a Halloween store, but they are pretty cool.  With the costumes and makeup and decorations and such.  Well this year, not so much.  The store we went into kinda looked like they were either using costumes left over from last year, or they were picking them off the back of some "Halloween costume truck".  It was horrible. A lot of the bags were missing pieces, so they said "10% off!"  But it would be like missing the crown for the Queen of Hearts or Something.

Also this:

I don't remember the "Arctic" Disney Princess with no pants, or the "Asian"  Princess, which I'm pretty sure is vaguely racist.

How about the plus sized Mario costume?  He's Super Mario! My husband said the mushroom made him grow in the wrong direction.

Now on to my rant about women's costumes:
Since when did Halloween become the time of year of colder weather, pumpkins, apples, and oh I forgot dressing up like a hooker?  Almost every single costume that I saw was "sexy" something or other.  Case in point:

Sexy Ghostbuster Costume Sexy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Costume                 What!?

"Sexy Ninja Turtle"                             and                                         "Sexy Ghost Buster"

I guess I see why they call her the "ghost buster".  Bust ha, ha!  But seriously, come on.  What kind of example are we setting for our little girls?  If my girls wanted to go out of the house looking like that I would have a heart attack.  Ugh.   I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one that feels this way. Walking through that store made me depressed that women are treated this way.  I just don't get it.

One of my friends posted this video to my facebook when I ranted about women's costumes on there.  It's pretty funny.

My favorite part is the "sexy piece of drywall".    What if I want to just go as a regular piece of drywall?  So  I will wrap this up by saying that I still have no idea what I want to dress up as for Halloween.  I guess it had better be something "sexy"  or I won't be able to find the costume for it unless I make it myself.  Hmmmmm there's an idea right there.

Tonight I am going to start with this yummy Pumpkin Pie Popcorn that I made.

The picture actually came out a lot better than I had hoped. I saw this recipe on Pinterest (my addiction).  It turned out really well and the kids loved it!

Pumpkin Pie Popcorn  adapted from Family Bites
  • 10 cups air popped popcorn
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon cloves
Directions:

Preheat oven to 250 °F.  Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper and set aside.

Spray a large mixing bowl with non-stick spray and add the popcorn.  Or be like me and forget that step and just try to spray around the popcorn.

In a medium saucepan, whisk together brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, salt and 2 tablespoons of water.

Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat.  Continue to simmer whisking often until mixture is boiling.  Allow mixture to boil for at least 2 minutes whisking often. (I would continually whisk, because the mixture will burn to the bottom of the pan if you don't.  As I have learned from making candy in the past).

After the 2 minutes, remove pan from heat and add all the spices and baking soda.  It will cause the mixture to turn a lighter brown and bubble up, so don't freak out.  Not that anyone would do that or anything. :)

Quickly pour the caramel mixture over the popcorn in the bowl.  Use a rubber spatula to mix the caramel into the popcorn coating as much of it as you can.  Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 1 hour.  Stir the mixture every 20 minutes with the rubber spatula.  Remove from the oven and let cook for 20 minutes (if you can wait that long, I couldn't).  Neither could the kiddos who were bugging me for an hour straight wanting to eat the popcorn.

She said it was an emergency that she had to have more!

Yeah, I don't know either. I think she gets it from me.

This is the website where I got the recipe.  I am not a fan of plagiarism  :)

Well my mother never really did have me tested.  But I'm pretty sure I'm not crazy (well maybe just a little).

I have been wanting to start a blog for a while, and I always get comments from people on facebook about how funny my kids and husband are.

I figure everyone has to be a little crazy to be able to get through this thing that we call life.  So I will be sharing my crazy life.  I love to cook, so there will be lots of recipes. I also like crafts, so I will share those as well. Some pretty hilarious things do happen around here, I hope that you all will join me, and maybe have a laugh in the process.
